Meet My Synthesizers

I’ve acquired a number of my favorite instruments and I just wanna share about it. Lately, I’ve been getting very busy with these, knowing that they’ll play a big role in influencing the sound of my future records, specially now that I’ve started producing again. I guess it’s time for you to meet my synthesizers.

This is Frank, my first synthesizer, a Novation Xio. I remember saving up much of my weekly allowance for this baby. And it was worth every peso.

The Xio is both a hardware synth and a MIDI controller, which means that I can use it with software Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) and control soft synths with it. I had been using it for 4 months when I discovered that it is also a USB-audio interface, which meant that I can use it to record. Record! I went wild with happiness when I discovered this. Armed with a laptop, a mic, headphones, and this baby, I was inspired to create Somedaydream. For me, it’s an amazing first synthesizer.

It’s pretty hard to believe now, but I realized I recorded almost 90% of the Someadaydream album with it. Frank was also my companion when I served my time with my previous bands, Danceplaycreate and Runmanila. Noice!

Meet Stein, Novation Ultranova. It is a bigger, badder, better, bluer version of Xio (in a way, since they’re both from Novation) It’s a very versatile virtual analogue synth that features a synth library and conductive rubber knobs, not to mention its awesome blue housing. Since it is easier to use, it taught me a lot about synthesis and creating my own sounds rather than just relying on presets. I used this for some leads on Delivery Boys, Do-Do With you and keys/bells on STS.

I use this bad boy for live performances. And I once blew up some PA system speakers with it. Whoops!

Slim Phatty. This is the crowned jewel of my synth collection so far. It’s a Moog (pronounced “Mogue”), one of the most prestigious of synth makers in the world. So I decided to keep its name.

I can’t believe I just found this lying around in my favorite music store in Cubao. The store keepers didn’t even know what it was til I laid my hands on it. It’s probably because it doesn’t look like the usual synthesizer since it doesn’t come with keys.

I don’t even know how to start telling you how awesome this piece of equipment is. The Slim Phatty is a monophonic synthesizer which means I can only play one note at a time with it which makes it perfect for creating lead and bass sounds. It’s a fairly simpler synth but the exceptional thing about it is the quality of its sound. It just wows me every time I hear it. It is a true analogue synthesizer. And it pushes me to be more creative. That’s what I love about it.

Last but definitely not the least, is my favorite, my Teenage Engineering OP-1! I call it Dans which is Swedish for “dance”, because this one hails all the way from Stockholm Sweden and it is one of the reasons I’m really getting into Electronic Dance Music (EDM). One obvious lovable thing about it is that it’s a portable synthesizer, the best one in the world! And the guys who made it are crazy.

There it is lying on the couch with my red song-writing guitar and you can just imagine how small it really is. Surprisingly though, its build is of superior quality. It has a metal unibody (very Apple inspired, which I like), it uses top-grade knobs and buttons, and features that revolutionary AMOLED screen, which is just amazing. (See it in action on Swedish House Mafia’s One music video: http://bit.ly/9Ob3AW)

I bring this one with me all the time, since its very portable and is packed with lots of features. Aside from being a synth, it’s also a programmable drum machine, 4-track tape recorder and sampler; which makes it sort of a miniature studio workstation. Perfect for recording when I’m getting inspired on the road.

And look! It’s a synth with monkeys in it! Crazy.

Some may not look like it but all synthesizers are very powerful instruments. They are the core of almost all kinds of electronic music. This is because synths can produce a wide range of sounds, noises, samples and effects: pads for ambient, leads and basses for electro/sythhpop, effects and noise sweeps for dance or house, and even those dirty wobble basses for dubstep. (Wub wub wub) I guess it would be the equivalent of a girlfriend who can do anything and everything…

Now that I’d thought about it, I wish I had given my synths girl names.

Oh well.

Thank you.

Geek out.

Epic/Watch out!

Just got home. What an epic day.

Today MYX announced the nominations for this year’s MYX Music Awards, #mma2012. And I will cut right to the point, Somedaydream/I got 6 nominations!

(Plus, another nomination for Hey Daydreamer as the boykiller, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, is nominated for Favorite Guest Appearance In a Music Video. Naks!)

That’s crazy! I can’t explain how happy I am or how I happy I should be. I have to admit though, it still hasn’t hit me yet. Right when I thought that I’ve been getting used to this, I’m thrown back to being overwhelmed by all the support, success and blessings. For that, I’m very grateful.

That said, here’s some exciting news bits.

Watch out this weekend, something really fun is coming. Oh you could just pretend! Watch out next month, big things and big celebrations to come! Watch out for my latest single, Sing This Song and its music video.

Up up here we go!

PS: Happy birthday to my brother, mentor and best friend, Champ Lui Pio, CEO of Mecca Music. Let’s do this! There’s no stopping us!

Fast-paced.

It all started with this Tweet. Right after school last Friday, I immediately got to work. Plans have been listed and I got right into it.

Friday afternoon. Did some shopping at Muji with my parents. It was their first time there and they actually liked it. Had to leave right away though to prepare for that night’s gig.

Awesome photo by Miguel Santiago.

Friday night. Gave my fellow Ateneans a wild performance. Gigs are the fastest. I’m starting the show one moment, and the next thing you know, it’s over. Time flies when you’re having fun.

Saturday after lunch. Iloilo-bound. Waiting for take off. Found this on the inflight magazine. Apparently, I am baby-faced. What a revelation.

Saturday 6pm. Just finished three Iloilo radio tours. Went straight to the local Astrolplus for a meet & greet and I was welcomed by this. It’s just awesome to see my own masterpiece in a place I’ve never been to before. “You’ve come a long way,” the voice in my mind told me. But there’s still a lot to be done.

Saturday 11-something PM. After performing for an event, I met the Dreamers of Iloilo. I’m so happy to have met them that I’m planning to give them something special soon. I will be back next week for the Dinagyang Festival and the official album tour.

Sunday night. Epic. I’m in Ayala Cebu performing for all these people. Gave them a dose of happiness, joy and love and then finished it with my LSS combo-song. I felt like all of Cebu sang “K-I-S-S-I-N-G” with me.

Monday morning. Daylight greeted me at the Cebu airport. It was time to come home.

I realized, I just lived a very fast-paced weekend. And it will take quite a bit more time for me to absorb all these grand experiences. I still have a lot of great things ahead for me this week, this month, and this whole year. I know can be too forward-minded sometimes, but for me, the important is I know how to look back. Looking back:

Saturday past midnight/Sunday morning. I was chilling with the crew and some new friends at Jaqs Bar Iloilo, and I found my self staring and reading this, the Holstee Manifesto. And I found out that that was only half of it.

Its last line is “Live your dream and share your passion”. And that’s exactly what I’m doing. For me, it doesn’t matter how fast or slow we chase our dreams and share our passion. What matters is that we do it.

Do it.

5 Things 2011 Taught Me

#5: Be A Sponge.

I started working on my solo electro pop project, Somedaydream, around 3 years ago, but things got more serious when I started working with my manager, Champ Lui Pio (former frontman of Hale), in the latter part of 2010. I still remember the countless prep talks and advice I get from him, but one that really stuck to my head was the one about “being a sponge”… so I can absorb everything. “Absorb everything so that your journey in 2011 would be unforgettable,” he said.

As a new kid in town, I needed to absorb every juicy experience I can. To do that, I needed to open my self to new possibilities, new opinions, new lessons and new people. I needed to be aware of how things are done, aware of where I am heading and most importantly, be aware of who I am with. I did a lot of observing and reflecting. I savored every new experience and acknowledged the emotions that came with it. I absorbed the good and the bad, positive and negative, the challenges, the risks, the hard things in life and the beautiful things that come my way.

I did just that in 2011, and it’s been unbelievable. I am not a full sponge and I don’t plan on being one, but I have absorbed quite a lot. So in this humble new blog of mine, allow me to squeeze myself out.

#4 Be A People Person.

Meeting new people is part of my job, and I love it. The previous year really taught me how to be a people person because I get to meet, talk and interact with a lot of people. Although admittedly, I’m an introvert, I’d like to think that I can balance it out.

I learned a lot by being with different people. I get powered by a crowd’s energy. I get inspired by experiences friends make together. I am enriched by stories new people share. I am motivated by the craft of professionals and artists. I am fueled by our ideas.

It’s easy. All I had to do is to drop all prejudice and accept people for who they are. I avoid pretentiousness and strive to be honest and true to myself. Show appreciation and gratitude whenever it is due. Be open-minded. Enjoy the company of others. Bask in the experience and the time you spend together.

#3 Be Magis.

The word magis is Latin for “more”. To be magis is to “be more”.

It is the epic motto that the Jesuits instill in every Atenean’s mind and heart. We were taught magis when we were just kids in grade school, brainwashing us in a good way. We were put up to the challenge of being magis in high school so we can practice it; so that we can live out magis in college and beyond.

For me, to “be more” means to give your best at everything. To strive for excellence and not be mediocre. To give 100%. To seize the day. Carpe diem. To have more, get more and to give even more. To transcend.

In 2011, for the lack of a better term, I magis-ed the heck out of myself. I’ve never put this philosophy into action more than ever. I clocked in more hours in my make-shift home studio to come out with the Somedaydream album. I took school more seriously. I gave my all to every rehearsal, performance, and other endeavors I do. I lived more.

Of course, this meant that I needed to make some sacrifices. “No sacrifice, no victory.” That’s what my mentor always tells me. Magis. That’s what my heart and mind tells me. And in the end, I can truly say that it was worth it.

#2 Be Me.

To “be me”, I have to ask myself the questions, “Who am I?” or “Who do I wanna be?” Luckily I found a simple solution: I made myself an I-Am-List. Here it is:

I am Rez. I am a student. I am a musician. I am a songwriter. I am Filipino. I am a friend. I am a son. I am a brother. And etc. You get the point.

If I can tell myself an I-Am and feel good about it, and know that I can live it out, then that’s who I am (and more.) “That’s who I am and it feels good,” is not a usual phrase we can tell ourselves so it must be worth something, right? However, if I can’t tell it to myself and feel good… then that’s probably not me.

I also made an I-Wanna-Be list: I wanna be an influencer. I wanna be a millionaire. I wanna be a producer. I wanna be legendary.

The same rule applies for this too. If I can’t feel good about telling myself, “I wanna be… something,” then that may not be me. And to know for sure, I will need to devote a lot of time in actualizing it/doing something about it/making it real.

In trying to “be me”, I make up these simple lists and try not to waste time. I believe that the earlier we spend time in figuring out who we are, the better. The previous year taught me that to “be me”, I needed to focus on actualizing my I-Am’s and I-Wanna-Be’s. Focus. Because time is running out. That’s all there is to it.

#1 Be Grateful.

I used to think meeting new people was all just part of the job, and that it was something I will have to do coz “it comes with my line of work”. This was the wrong mindset.

It’s a blessing that I’ve met a lot of new people. I met professionals who shared their work, passion and wisdom with me. I made new friends who make living life more exciting. I met the Dreamers. The awesome legion of Somedaydream fans who continue to support and help me. I continue to meet different people of all ages, backgrounds, and personalities. And the wonderful thing is I learn something from them every time. And I’m grateful for that.

Being grateful keeps me productive. When you’re grateful for something, you don’t waste it. I appreciate time more and use it well. I put my free time and work time to good use. I make sure all my gear are utilized. I multiply my talents.

I’ve learned to always have a thankful mindset. This way, I can be more appreciative of the little things in life, or the things that we take for granted. It helps me appreciate the good things rather than sulk on things that I don’t like or don’t get. Being grateful keeps me happy and positive. I’m thankful for the material things, family, friendship, ideas, lessons and most especially the love we all share.

Finally, the best thing about it is… the more grateful we are for something, the more of it we get. So never stop being grateful, and life will never stop giving you blessings.

Thank you. *bow*

Lezdothis 2012

Here are a couple of things I want to be able to do this year.

Go Global. I wanna share my music to the rest of the world. The simplest way would be to ask people to share the music to friends and loved ones in different countries. Hopefully we can also put up the Somedaydream album on iTunes and maybe do some shows abroad. Got my fingers crossed for that.

Home Studio Level Up. I recently changed my workstation set-up. I got all my gear and put them inside one big room with a baby grand piano. Got my synths on one side and the guitars on the other. I’m still dreaming of getting new studio monitors and a big display screen. And maybe some new mics and a new audio interface. Maybe I’ll post about my stuff soon! That would be nice.

Watch more concerts. Forever The Sickest Kids, The Used, A Rocket To The Moon, and Cobra Starship are all coming this year, not mention Katy Perry. Give me tickets!

Get a crazy haircut. I just have to.

More entertainment. Anticipating lots of awesome movies this year. The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, Battleship, The Hobbit and more. I’m also stoked for Jason Mraz’s new album as well as Calvin Harris’. As for games, I got my eyes locked on Diablo III.

More tours and shows. Somedaydream is going around the country this year. It would be a dream come true to travel around and do more shows in schools, malls, and events. Gonna meet and greet  the Dreamers too! I’m really looking forward to this.

More music. I’ve been writing some new songs and I don’t plan on stopping. I’m actually very happy that I’m back on the songwriting phase again. I wonder when the song production phase will begin. Hmm. And also, maybe I’ll give away some free downloads.

Happy new year!
